I love roller skating, apart from the smashing into the floor bits. It's been one of the greatest joys of my life in the last couple of years. The monkey god. Reminding me of both the monkey mind chattering away constantly in my thoughts and my essential primate nature. A companion of Rama, one of the seven immortals and a central character in the Ramayana. The God of wisdom, strength, courage, devotion and self-discipline. He holds a light up to aspire to. When I was a teenager the program "Monkey" was on the TV weekly, it was a heroes tale loosely based on Hanuman, I always made sure I caught it. I also have a memory of visiting a temple dedicated to Hanuman in Hampi when I was in India. We were there late at night, lying on the still warm rock shelf, I heard a noise of something beating on the rocks and then about fifty monkeys ran over the top of us, jumping over us as they passed, pretty amazing. 60cms x 60cms (24 inches x 24 inches). Prices include postage to the UK and Europe.

I'm fascinated by hands. My life is dominated by what I can do with my hands. The people I admire most (or a great deal of them) create something with their hands that touches my heart somehow. A thought on how to represent the subconscious mind. I was thinking of ancients and ancestors, of wisdom and the characters of tumbling thoughts. I know... Anyway fun to paint. This was one of them that I did a big chunk on it and then put it aside for a while before getting it to a finished result. I stuck to pretty much blues and reds just for the hell of it. I was thinking about the horror of war and how as we go back into the past of my grandfather and great grandfathers generation how unprotected soldiers were on the battlefield. I imagine myself in that situation, I was lucky to not have to go to war and I count myself lucky to have been refused entry to the military when I applied to get in when I was 18, had I been accepted things may have panned out differently. Soldiers are brave, I admire their bravery, in war they skirt the edge of death, life is uncertain and I imagine that the temporary nature of living must be felt raw and fully at the surface of  soldiers' being. Abstract in greens and reds. Is it art deco? Sort of, maybe. I like it's upward flow and it conjures the feeling of a rolling landscape for me in some respect. With my hands I have formed my life, with them I've made music, juggled, made art, lifted, carried, worked, fought, climbed, conveyed physical tenderness and myriad other things. Their the part of myself I know best physically, the part that cross my vision more than any other part of my body. How do you get better at stuff you think your weak at? Practice, that's how, so that's what I'm going to do. Where does inspiration come from and what does it produce? Yesterday the main fuse in my house tripped out and I had no electricity. I had no access to reference photos on my computer. I got bored of waiting for my electricity provider to phone back so I made marks on a canvas for a while. In between other stuff after the electric came back on I kept digging at it.
