Conceptual Art

This one took a while. A commission for a wedding present with a list of memories; divers, cyclists, cafes, buddhas, a cat, a beach resort in Bali, a turtle at a cleaning station and a couple of Bali Mynahs for good measure . It was fun to try to work out it how to get all the bits in it. Acrylic on canvas 60 cms x 60 cms.

I was thinking about the horror of war and how as we go back into the past of my grandfather and great grandfathers generation how unprotected soldiers were on the battlefield. I imagine myself in that situation, I was lucky to not have to go to war and I count myself lucky to have been refused entry to the military when I applied to get in when I was 18, had I been accepted things may have panned out differently. Soldiers are brave, I admire their bravery, in war they skirt the edge of death, life is uncertain and I imagine that the temporary nature of living must be felt raw and fully at the surface of  soldiers' being. Pulled from my imagination. With my hands I have formed my life, with them I've made music, juggled, made art, lifted, carried, worked, fought, climbed, conveyed physical tenderness and myriad other things. Their the part of myself I know best physically, the part that cross my vision more than any other part of my body. I love roller skating, apart from the smashing into the floor bits. It's been one of the greatest joys of my life in the last couple of years. I love all this Marvel/DC Comics stuff, I'm not obsessive about it but it's a fun bit of fantasy world meets real world, super hero/villain, have a massive scrap with crazy archetype characters. Cats appearing from cell type droplet structures eyeing up some by standing balls of wool also in cell type droplet structures. I don't think any further explanation is necessary. A thought on how to represent the subconscious mind. I was thinking of ancients and ancestors, of wisdom and the characters of tumbling thoughts. I know... Anyway fun to paint. This was one of them that I did a big chunk on it and then put it aside for a while before getting it to a finished result. I stuck to pretty much blues and reds just for the hell of it. How do you get better at stuff you think your weak at? Practice, that's how, so that's what I'm going to do. Hands are a bit hit and miss for me, ranging between nailing it and missing the nail and smashing the hammer into my thumb. So I got this one I think, more hand based paintings on the way. Ethereal, magical, every one holding a rainbow. They sting quite a bit though if they get in your eye. 70cms x 50cms (27.5 inches x 19.5 inches). SOLD.

I'm fascinated by hands. My life is dominated by what I can do with my hands. The people I admire most (or a great deal of them) create something with their hands that touches my heart somehow. I sold this to someone who loved the film "The Company of Wolves", which I remember watching in the 80s. It's a Red Riding Hood thing to be sure, the background told me to do it. It reminds me that the original Grimms fairy tales were softened for the modern English palette, I don't understand why. Are we so fickle, so weak that we (the English) can't handle a scary story, will it be too real for us? I guess it is probably a massive pain in the arse for parents to have frightened children who are afraid of the dark or the forest or whatever. Acrylic on canvas 60cms (24 inches) diameter. SOLD.

Arguably the best juggler ever, Francis Brunn. This picture was a commission for a juggler (I've also been a pro juggler on and off for many years). The painting is based on Francis' routine and final mind blowing trick where he included 12 objects (that's really hard!). Although one of these characters in the painting is not Francis, it's Ernest Montego who was the only man to go one better and include 13 objects in the Brunn finish.
